Nikolai Sindorf (Laos)
Nikolai joined the WWF-US Conservation Science Program in 2006. He is working on water system assessments in order to inform the conservation and development sectors about the status and vulnerabilities of their river systems. Together with his colleagues in the freshwater team, Nikolai has worked on conservation issues in the US Southeastern Rivers and Streams, in the Congo, in the Eastern Himalayas, and in the Mekong. Nikolai has worked on the freshwater ecoregions of the world, and is currently working on developing innovative water system analyses using HydroSHEDS.
Prior to working at the WWF, Nikolai did research on river basin management and water policy in Indonesia. From 1999 to 2003 he worked in Egypt on water management and GIS for the Dutch Directorate General of International Co-operation. Nikolai received his M.Sc. in Tropical Land and Water Management from Wageningen University, the Netherlands in 1999. He did research on water user organizations and water management in Thailand and in Indonesia and on GIS applications on channel networks in Spain.
In this position at the WWF Nikolai hopes that by using tools such as hydrology and GIS we can increase awareness concerning the exploitation of freshwater resources among different sectors and to identify workable solutions. He is currently stationed in Vientiane, Laos.
